Building social media for businesses

Social media can be overwhelming, with new trends arising every day and activity being hit or miss, it can be hard to reach social success

What about when it comes to social media for your business? Whether your a small business navigating the working world or a corporate company that is struggling to find their place in this creative realm, social media can be an effective tool to expand your audience.

Knowing where to start can be daunting, that’s why we spoke to Harvey Morton, a digital consultant from Harvey Morton Digital, on how to grow your business through social media and gain social success.

“Social media marketing is all about using social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Threads, X, and LinkedIn to connect with your audience, build your brand, and drive sales. It’s super important for businesses because it allows you to reach a wider audience, engage with customers in real-time, and create a more personal connection with your brand.

“Customers today love to see your brand’s personality, so using social media marketing is a great way to take risks and show some humour.” explains Harvey.

By showing the faces and behind the scenes of your business it adds a human element to your brand and allows your audience to connect with you.

Harvey highlights his top tips for businesses who are diving into social media, “First define your goals, know your audience, and choose the right platforms for your business. Then, create a content strategy that’s engaging and authentic, and don’t forget to interact with your followers to build relationships. For instance, if you’re looking to target a younger audience, you should focus on TikTok and Instagram Reels, creating engaging video content that your audience can relate to.”

A key part of building your business through social media is to decide what platform is best for your brand.

“When it comes to choosing the right social media platforms for your business, consider your target audience and the type of content you want to share. For example, if you’re a visually-driven brand, Instagram might be your go-to, while LinkedIn could be ideal for B2B businesses.”

In addition, if your small business is unique and has a niche following then Facebook may be best as the feature to join specific groups and build a community can create a consistent and loyal audience.

Harvey explains that it’s all about testing the waters and seeing where you attract an audience and find social success. “Focus on a couple of channels at a time, there’s no need to be on every platform.”

Also, learning from your mistakes is how you know what works and what doesn’t for you as a business.

Within social media, consistency is key. Planning posts, keeping a content schedule and posting regularly at similar times will boost your activity.

How to Grow your business through social media

It’s important to ask yourself what you want out of social media and set goals and targets on what you want to achieve.  Harvey says that, “To stay relevant and boost activity, keep up with the latest trends, post consistently, and use visual content like videos and images.

“Engage with your followers by asking questions, running polls, and responding to comments. And don’t be shy to collaborate with influencers or other businesses in your niche.”

Werk’s No1 tip is to remember to inform your audience on your social media and where to find it. Whether that’s linking it on your contact page on your website or including your social media handles on business cards or emails, any promotion is good for your business.

Interacting with your audience and being social is all part of growth.
